Prices at an appliance outlet or scratch and dent appliance store are low every day. Despite this, even these discount stores have further sales throughout the year, helping you to save even more money, or buy appliances you thought would be above your budget.

With rotating sales throughout the year, the busiest sale times at a home appliance outlet are often:

      • National Holiday weekends such as July 4th, Memorial Day weekend, and Labor Day
      • New Year January sales after the madness of seasonal shopping have calmed
      • Black Friday and Cyber Monday

      Exploring Outlet Stores

A home appliance outlet is filled with staff who focus on nothing but appliances, unlike a big box store where employees are spread thin across a range of products. Outlet stores offer varying discounts on appliances.

Although a discount appliances store will have great prices on a wide range of products, to get maximum savings you can take advantage of both price promotions in the store and manufacturers' rebates.

How to Take Advantage of Promotions

Store promotions happen regularly and are most visible around holiday weekends. Promotions may take the form of discounts on certain appliances or give you big savings for buying more than one product. These store promotions are particularly valuable when you need to shop for an entire kitchen set of affordable appliances.

      What Are Manufacturers Rebates?

A rebate is a promotional offer to save money offered by the manufacturer of the appliance rather than the retailer. It differs from a store promotion as the discount is sent to the customer via mail after their purchase.

To claim a rebate, a customer will purchase their appliance, fill in a short form from the manufacturer, and send it with a copy of the receipt. After a few weeks, the manufacturer sends out a check or pre-loaded debit card for the discounted amount.

To find opportunities for manufacturers rebates:

      • In store: Ask the appliance experts at your store while shopping if there are any current rebate offers.
      • Mailing lists: many stores will offer an email mailing list option to let you know when big sales and rebate opportunities are coming up.
      • Recommendations: Manufacturers' rebates are often short-term offers, so when somebody you know lets you know about a rebate deal, don’t wait too long to take a look.

“Open Box” and “Scratch and Dent” Appliances

“Open box” and “scratch and dent” appliances are options to open even more savings when shopping for new appliances and mattresses. These items are often sold for a reduced rate, even at a home appliance outlet or discount store.

      Open Box Items

Open box items are appliances that are not offered sealed in their original packaging but have been tested, inspected, and are in good working order. These items are often sold at a discount simply because they do not have their box or were a display model in the store.

Open box items are available for several reasons, including:

      • Customer returns: Sometimes customers select a new appliance only to find that it does not fit in their home, or they do not like the design when it arrives. When items are returned, if they are in good working order, they are sold as “open box” options.

      • Former display models: When you visit an appliance store, a display model of each appliance is usually available for customers to see the design, features, and size of the machine. As these display models are removed from their boxes, when they are done being floor models, they are often sold at a discount.

      • Damaged box items: Sometimes transit issues can result in the box for an appliance being badly damaged while the item remains in perfect condition. In this case, the appliance would be sold as an “open box,” often at a further discount.

      Scratch and Dent Appliances

Occasionally when new appliances are used as floor models for display, returned by customers, or have an issue in transit, they suffer a scratch or a dent, making them unable to be sold as new.  Often appliances in this condition have extremely minor defects that are barely visible or have imperfections in areas that are not regularly seen. For many customers, these slight issues are not a problem, and they welcome the additional discount available. These “scratch and dent” appliances allow first-class appliances to be sold at a major discount, and affordable items to be marked down to a complete bargain.

If you don’t mind a minor scratch or dent, check out the options at your home appliance outlet.

Is It a Good Idea to Finance Appliances?

Appliances are a major purchase for a home and sometimes unexpected breakages result in people being taken by surprise. Financing the cost is often necessary or preferable for some people and many appliance stores can provide options to spread the cost.

      Why Finance Appliances

Financing is an option when people do not have the full cost of an appliance available, or they would prefer to spread the cost over a period of time.

      • An appliance breaks unexpectedly
      • Taking advantage of a low or zero-interest finance offer
      • Keeping more cash on hand

      Options for Financing Appliances

Store based credit cards: A modern way for a retailer or store to provide financing is using a store credit card. When approved, the customer will have access to a revolving line of credit to manage, rather than seeking a loan for a specific appliance. Retailer financing credit cards often have introductory low or 0% interest offers for a fixed amount of time, with the interest rate rising after the promotion ends.

Financing loans through the retailer: This is a more traditional style of financing. In this case, a loan to purchase certain appliances will be processed through the retailer, with the customer paying a monthly payment until the loan is paid. This differs from a revolving line of credit as it only concerns the items the customer was approved for on the day.

Personal loans and credit cards: Many people choose to finance the purchase of new appliances but prefer to use their credit options such as credit cards or personal loans. Customers often choose this route when they have a low interest credit card rate or are benefiting from air miles points or cashback benefits.
